What are fillers?
Soft tissue fillers work to restore fullness to the face that is often lost as we age. Depending on the area injected, fillers can be used to soften wrinkles, smooth skin folds, or replace areas of volume loss.
The most common type of soft tissue fillers includes hyaluronic acid derivatives (e.g. Restylane, Juvederm).
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our skin that helps to give it a smooth and youthful appearance.
Which areas can be injected with soft tissue fillers?
Many different areas experiencing volume loss can be injected with fillers, including the lips and cheeks. Depending on the area and the desired result, different fillers may be recommended.
What are the potential side effects of fillers?
The most common side effects include bruising and swelling. Other side effects include lumps, skin discoloration, or skin infection. Rarely, the filler can infiltrate a blood vessel and cause serious side effects such as necrosis and blindness.
How long do fillers last?
Depending on the area injected, fillers typically last between 4 and 12 months.
